Major Field of Study (MFS)

The Major Field of Study (MFS) classification was used for the classification of field-of-study data in the Census of Population and other socio-economic surveys. It has been replaced by the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Canada 2000 as the official standard.

The MFS was created for use in the 1986 Census of Population and was revised a number of times over the years. The version of MFS documented here is the one used to disseminate field-of-study data from the 2001 Census of Population. It comprises 11 major levels, 110 minor levels, and 449 unit levels.
